Sparr.Turn the tide of life with effective cancer treatments In 2012, life expectancy of a person diagnosed with cancer in the UK was an average of four years – now it’s eight. Research from Cancer Research UK shows the death rate from cancer has fallen by over 40 per cent in the last 20 years. This is thanks to advances in treatment and care. The importance of early diagnosis of cancer The research, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, demonstrates that early diagnosis and treatment reduces the risk of cancer developing. We now know that some of the most common cancers, such as breast, prostate and bowel, are usually caused by a single gene mutation – but most cancers develop from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. This means that all people are at risk of developing cancer and you could have cancer today without any symptoms. The earlier cancer is diagnosed, the better. Early diagnosis is easier when we have high levels of public education, the NHS and well-trained GPs. There has also been a huge improvement in the quality of test results, but the NHS remains underfunded and under pressure, particularly with longer waiting times. As a result, waiting for results can take longer than waiting for treatment. GPs are not always able to see someone with a lump, for example, until after they’ve been diagnosed with cancer. That’s why it’s so important to have self-examination and regular check-ups. The rise in breast cancer But it’s not just breast cancer that has seen a decline. In the last 20 years, the death rate from lung cancer has halved and the death rate from pancreatic cancer has gone down by three-quarters. Many people think that because we are living longer, that cancers are ‘catching up’ with us. But they are really not. In fact, cancers that are most common in older people – such as lung cancer, breast cancer and bowel cancer – are the cancers that have seen the most improvement. Whilst the death rates for some cancers have improved, the number of new cases has risen. For example, the number of people diagnosed with bowel cancer has gone up by over 15 per cent. Why this trend is happening We
