Maria was appointed to the Board of Directors in November 2022, to support SAHR’s international advocacy, fundraising and partnership efforts.
Maria has a wide experience in multilateral diplomacy, international relations, advocacy and partnership within the European Union, the United Nations and other International Organisations and NGOs, in Geneva. She served as Senior Adviser for human rights, humanitarian affairs, health, disarmament issues and as a country representative for more than a decade. This role has provided her with the opportunity to be part of a multicultural and dynamic environment with major responsibilities in support of global causes. Throughout her career, Maria has been working to establish and maintain strong and trusting relationships with a large network of key people across the international organizations, the philanthropic and the private sector.
Maria works for the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), as Head of Geneva office and UN Representative. In her current capacity, she advises human rights defenders from all regions, regarding different international advocacy initiatives. She also continues to work on the promotion and protection of human rights, humanitarian affairs, conflict prevention, advocacy and foreign policy. She defines the human rights advocacy strategies in consultation with dedicated internal and external interlocutors focusing towards strengthening the human rights machinery.
Maria holds a BA in Law and Criminology from the London Metropolitan University, a DAS in Strategic and Operational Philanthropy from the University of Geneva (UNIGE) and a Diploma on Sustainable Corporations from Oxford University. In addition, she received training on Project Management from the Project Management Institute (PMI), and on Cyber Security from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL).
She speaks English, Greek and French. In her free time Maria enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, traveling and sports.
